The Morriston Davies Trust was set up by the widow and two daughters of Hugh Morriston Davies after his death at the age of 86 in 1965. The Trust has since funded many scholars, projects, and lectures in the field of tuberculosis and chest medicine.
Hugh Morriston Davies was appointed to the consultant staff of UCH in 1908 at the age of 29 and became a world famous thoracic surgeon.
He was the first to study the X-ray appearances of diseases of the chest, appearances which physicians at UCH at the time thought were not essential to diagnosis. He was the first to resect a lung cancer, performing a dissection lobectomy for the first time in 1912.
In 1913 he performed the first thoracoplasty for tuberculosis in Britain.
Then, in 1916, while operating on a patient with empyema he pricked his finger. Sepsis followed and eventually resulted in a crippled right hand. He resigned from his London appointments and two years later bought a tuberculosis sanatorium in North Wales which he soon established as a centre for excellence.
He pioneered pneumothorax treatment for tuberculosis and taught himself to operate with his left hand. He began to perform major thoracic surgery again, at first in North Wales, then in Cheshire and eventually in Liverpool. The Universities of Liverpool and Wales honoured him with doctorates and the Royal College of Physicians awarded him the Webber Parks Prize for prevention and care of tuberculosis.
This fellowship is advertised twice a year and is available to support visits to medical centres in the U.K. or abroad for the purpose of undertaking research or clinical training related to respiratory medicine.
Applications are invited from medical and nursing graduates practising in the UK, including consultants.
We would normally award grants of up to £5000 to several successful applicants but please note that larger amounts have been awarded and applications may be part funded.
